With everyone in the F1 world holding their breath to see if Renault is going to withdraw from F1, it can’t be helped to think the once prestige and glorious championship is losing some of its glitter.
Renault recently held an intense general meeting to debate their future in F1. No definite answer could be reached with Renault team's chief executive Carlos Ghosn saying they will "make an announcement on our participation in Formula 1 before the end of the year."
Should Renault follow Honda, BMW, Toyota and decide to withdraw from the championship it would mean that four big-name manufacturers withdrewed in the last 12 months. Take into account Bridgestone recently announced that they will also not renew their contract when it expires by the end of 2010, the question needs to ask where the future of F1 lies?
Will it be a case of a watered down championship? Will spectators still want to follow Formule One with new faces like Campos Grand Prix, Team US F1 and Manor Grand Prix ?
The withdrawal from so many big-name manufacturers is an alarming face for everyone concerned with the sport. But none so more than that of Toyota, as it means Toyota, GM, Ford, and VW are not interested in investing in the sport. If four of the biggest car manufacturers is not willing to participate in F1 why should the spectators follow it?
And who will replace Bridgestone at the end of 2010? Pirelli already said they are not available. Michelin quitted F1 in 2006 due to the fact that a sole tyre supplier was regulated by the FIA, while Michelin believes in competition, so it is unlikely that they will return. So who will step up?
These are some of the tough questions the FIA needs to answer to keep the interest of the avid supporter going.
