Former South Africa batsman, Andrew Hudson has been appointed by Cricket South Africa (CSA) as the new convenor of selectors.
This news was declared by CSA’s CEO, Gerald Majola, who had held the post of convenor since the entire selection panel had been disbanded, following the resignation of coach Mickey Arthur in January.
The new National Selection Panel will comprise of Andrew Hudson (convenor); Corrie van Zyl (national coach); Kepler Wessels (batting coach) and Shafiek Abrahams (high performance manager); with Graeme Smith (captain) as a final selector.
Majola also added that Corrie van Zyl would remain as interim coach until after the ICC World Cup 2011 but the post will be advertised soon.
That was the boring stuff, now comes my explanation of why I said unlucky –
I always thought Andrew Hudson was the most “unluckiest” batsmen in cricket history. There were countless times that he was given out LBW, but the replays showed him not being out.
Now of course there weren`t television reviews nor were there captain call-backs then, but I can still remember it. Hudson and Keppler (later Hudson and Kirsten) walking out to bat and just as he settled in, he was given out by some umpire after an over exuberant appeal by the bowler.
Always the gentleman, he would then tuck his bat and helmet under the arms and walk straight off without any fuss. South African cricket can only be in good hands if he handles his job in the same gracious manner he handled his cricket.
