Most accidents involving cyclists is caused due to someone not paying attention. The following Safety tips is there to help you cycle trough South Africa safer.
Think with your head - Always wear a helmet.
It had has been law in South Africa since 2004.
Besides that, you can’t predict what will happen next. Get a quality helmet to protect your most valuable organ – your brain. Always replace your helmet after a crash.
Obey the traffic rules
Ride on the right side of the road and stop at all stop signs and red traffic lights. Think for others and be visible at all times. Fit front and rear lights on your bike and always wear reflective clothing. Try riding in a single file, unless you are overtaking.
Always carry identification with you.
Have your next-of-kin programmed into your cell phone under a clear - In Case of Emergency- entry. Carry your medical aid details with you, if applicable. Have identification both on your bicycle and on your person, in case you get separated.
Indicate your intentions to other road users.
Try and get acknowledgement from others before making our move. Always be courteous, a quick smile and a "thank you" wave also can go a long way.
Ride defensively but decisively.
Keep a clear space around you. Make it easy for a others to anticipate what you are going to do (e.g. stopping your bicycle, turning left or right, etc) so that he/she can act accordingly. Ride in a straight line without swerving unnecessarily from side to side.
Concentrate on cycling.
Do not use an iPod, phone or anything else that might distract you while riding! You need to be able to hear approaching traffic, or other cyclists who may be warning you about a problem.
Lastly Be careful. Ride as if you are invisible to traffic until you are sure a car has seen you. Be careful when riding past parked vehicles, as they may suddenly open their doors. Give yourself enough space to maneuver.
