Rory McIlroy set a new course record by carding a final round of 62, and thereby winning the Quail Hollow Championship. It was McIlroy`s first PGA title as he became the youngest winner on the Tour since Tiger Woods in 1996.
McIlroy, who is 21 tomorrow, held off two major champions with a brilliant display of his talents. His round of 62 included eight birdies and an eagle for a 15-under-par total of 273. He won by four strokes over Phil Mickelson the Masters champion, and five over Ángel Cabrera, who had shared the lead with seven holes to play.
McIlroy just made the cut with first rounds scores of 72 and 73, however his tournament changed around the 7th hole as he made hat-trick birdies to turn for 32. After that, he stormed away of the field with a run of birdie-eagle-birdie from the 14th.
Mcilroy said "I didn't realise I was going eight, nine, 10 under par. I just knew I'd got my nose in front, I was just trying to stay there.
