The British Open starts today at St. Andrews on the “Old Course” just as it did for the first time in 1860 and if last year was anything to go by this year is going to a cracker. Remember last year’s runner up Tom Watson at the age of 59?The “Old Course” is a golf course that calls for shot-making and maneuvering the ball in either direction. The unstable weather conditions calls for changing the trajectory of the ball, the massively sloped fairways calls for innovation and guts to go for it.
All chararistics of the best player in the world, Tiger Woods. Last year Woods didn`t play due to injury, but this year he is looking to capture his 15th major championship. Everyone has a feeling that this could be the tournament that Tiger comes back and finally wins a major. His streak of consecutive weeks at No. 1 is in jeopardy and he needs this to protect it.
However, it wont be that easy. In his way to glory stands a few players with big dreams. Ernie Els, "Big Easy" could be his biggest rival. He started 2010 with two victories, faded a bit but still have the will to win. If Ernie can keep his emotions under control, we might just see another "W" to this year's scorecard.
Phil Mickelson does not have any momentum as he missed last week’s cut at the Scottish Open, but never discard him. Mickelson is one of the best recovery players of all time and if he putts well, he might lift the trophy.
Young guns like Rickie Fowler, Chris Wood, Rory McIlroy, Ryo Ishikawa is naturally a good bet to spice up the event while Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and winner of the 2009 British Open, Stewart Cink is all strong contenders in their own right.
But, this one is about Tiger. I believe he has had enough time to adjust to the media and is eagerly awaiting his chance. After all, Tiger has won two British Opens at this venue, first in 2000 by eight strokes and then in 2005 by five strokes. It is time for Tiger to stand up and do it again.
