On Saturday the Wallabies came out firing and won the Springboks 21-6. The Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane has not been the Boks favorite hunting ground in the past, but that was not the reason why the Wallabies handed the Boks their first defeat in the Tri-Nations.
There was the whistle of Wayne Barnes that sometimes looked like it was broken every time the Aussies infringed & magically began to work at scrum time. And there was the brilliance of young fullback James O'Connor but in all fairness to Australia - It was by competing at breakdowns, clever running and passing, and being more physical than the Boks what eventually won the game.
What? Yes, the Aussies out rugged us, they were quicker at the breakdowns & ferocious at scrum time. The Springboks lacked the intensity that made them renowned in world rugby. There was also the decision making that lacked the “killing” touch. In the first half both centers had opportunities to put the first try of the match under the posts but neither could finish. Peter De Villiers blamed the traveling for the lack in physicality and concentration.
With one game to play it is unlikely that Div will change his team around if not forced by injury, but the scrums continue to be a problem. Will it be rectified in 7 days? How about resting Heinrich Brüssow or Pierre Spies? Neither of them impressed in the last two games and maybe it is time to give Schalk Burger a starting position, he can play both positions & we need that physical attack that only he can bring.
And that is exactly what the Springboks will need when the face the All Blacks this Saturday. The All Blacks will have Daniel Carter in the backline & will try beating us in the same manner as the Wallabies, by running & kicking better than us after securing good ball upfront. Lets just hope Div & team have a plan to bring the trophy hom
