The Vodacom Blue Bulls got their campaign back on track with a 32-18 win over the Lions at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday night.
Flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter contributed 27 points as the Bulls fought hard for a win over the ever-improving Lions. Potgieter kicked six penalties, including a crucial 50 -something metre penalty on the stroke of half time, two conversions and scored a try.
The Bulls played their typical forward-style, dominated the collisions while Potgietr turned the pressure on with pin-point kicking.
Springboks Francois Hougaard, Dewald Potgieter and Flip van der Merwe injected some newfound energy into the team, while strong performances from Fudge Mabeta and Chiliboy Ralepelle towards created opportunities for flyers John Mametsa and Gerhard van den Heever out wide.
Although it was the Lions third defeat in this year’s Currie Cup, it was clear that the days of lack luster performances is over. Coach John Mitchell is building a formidable young team with the likes of of captain Franco van der Merwe, Warren Whiteley, fullback Jaco Taute and new kid Elton Jantjies.
The fact that the Bulls couldn’t score a bonus try is evidence that the Lions is on the up and will have to be taken seriously by future opponents.
For the Bulls and the Boks it was good to see Hougaard at scumhalf. His service was fast, accurate and it is easy to see how he could be a future star at the back of the scrum for the Boks.
