This weekend saw another big win for the Western Province in the Currie Cup as they continued their brilliant form by demolishing Griquas 50-3 in Kimberley.
Western Province now leads the Currie Cup table with 23 points out of a possible 25, followed closely by the Sharks (21). In third place and somewhat of the pace is the Blue Bulls with 16 points and in fourth, Griquas with 15 points.
Western Province traveled to Kimberley with the hope of ending their losing streak (21-20 in 2008 & 33-32 in 2009) against a tough Griquas outfit. The men from Cape Town did just that.
Province had a great start to the match, creating momentum through strong driving mauls and setting the backline up with quality ball, but they lost momentum when No 8 Duane Vermeulen was harshly yellow-carded for a high tackle around the end of the first quarter.
Griquas tried valiantly to suppress the pressure from the Province forward pack, launching attack after attack but failed the put any points on the board. After half time the flood gates opened and Province ran in six tries to nun with innovative play from all 15 players alike.
The Final score might not represent a true reflection of the Griquas as team but it surely is a true reflection of the Western Province deadly attacking abilities.
In the game between the Sharks and the Lions, young talent Patrick Lambie continued to “wow” spectators with his show of maturity and his contribution of 28 points as the Sharks downed the Lions 48-19.
It was a tight affair, with the teams turning with the score at 21-19. Then, in a space of 8 minutes, the Lions conceded two intercept passes and the game was effectively over.
Lambie, playing his first game of the season as flyhalf, scored a try himself converted 4 tries and slotted 5 penalties in his 28 point contribution.
Other results:
Cheetahs 45-30 Pumas
Blue Bulls 43-38 Leopards
